Breaking Down Barriers: Women in Esports and Competitive Gaming
Until recently, the esports and competitive gaming field was mostly governed by men,but women recently rose to prominence in this domain. Although nearly half the gaming community is female and female participation is rising in esports competitions only 5% of players are competing at major events. Efforts to promote inclusivity are starting to transform this story.
Sasha “Scarlett” Hostyn and Eefje “Sjokz” Depoortere set a path for upcoming players in the esports world. These gamers don’t just encourage those wanting to play competitively but also confront biases regarding female players in tournaments. With growing awareness about the need for female involvement in esports leagues and tournaments are being set up to allow women to compete without the fear of being targeted.
Still challenges exist even with these progressions. Countless female gamers deal with harassment and discrimination that stops them from taking part in gaming competitions. Programs such as Riot Games’ VCT Game Changers plan to provide chances for women and build an encouraging community.
The increase of women in esports demonstrates a favorable movement towards more inclusivity and diversity. The industry can build a just space that values skill and enthusiasm for talent independently of gender by pushing through obstacles and supporting women.
